Do I have to pay the radio contribution as a student?
Basically, yes. This applies to German students as well as for foreign Students.
The contribution is due for the opportunity to use the numerous radio, television and
online services of ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio. Everyone who is of age and
has its own apartment must pay this contribution. For this purpose a registration at
the contribution service is necessary.
Exemption is possible if the study is financed with the help of BAföG. The exact
regulations can be found at: www.rundfunkbeitrag.de
Note: In a shared apartment the exemption does not apply to other roommates.
Only if all roommates receive BAföG and are therefore exempt themselves, all
persons living in the flat pay no broadcasting fee.
